Back in the 1870's, the Northeastern Railroad Company wanted to extend its line from Athens to Clarkesville. This line would follow a stagecoach route already established between the two locations. The village of Brick Store (early Maysville) was a stop on this route where Mr. Abraham Atkins, the only merchant, offered supplies and a blacksmith. The stagecoach brought passengers and mail and stopped at a log cabin at Brick Store. According to the late Mrs. Daisy Shubert, the house she lived in at 41 Bacon Street, in Maysville, served as this log cabin. The foundation is made of logs. Gillsville Road (State Route 52) roughly follows this old stagecoach route. Page last updated 11/18/2011 |
