Dr. Madison Pope Deadwyler (1873-1942), son of Capt. G.E. Deadwyler, graduated with his undergraduate degree from Emory College, at Oxford, in 1894, and received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1897. Dr. Deadwyler returned to his hometown of Maysville and established his medical practice. In 1904 Dr. Deadwyler married Rosa "Rose" Gorham of Crawfordville, GA, and had two children, one of which died in infancy. Rose is credited with being instrumental in the design of the Victorian style of the house, and Dr. Deadwyler nicknamed the house "Rose's Castle." Dr. Deadwyler had an office at one end of the front porch and also an office one block away at 10 Homer Street.
Dr. Deadwyler lived in the house until his death in 1942. In 1947 Rose remarried and continued to live in the house until her death in 1963. Dr. Deadwyler and Rose are both buried in Sunrise Cemetery just a short walk from the house. Bob and Valerie Richardson, current owners, graciously opened the house for the 2008 Victorian Maysville Christmas Tour of Homes. The Richardsons believe that Rose's spirit continues to bless the home. From time to time, the Richardsons take cuttings from the old rose bushes in the back yard and visit Sunrise Cemetery.
