Parade

Big festival to open Friday

Thumb wedding to a dunking machine will be a part of Maysville Autumn Leaf
Arts Festival this weekend.
The festival will open at 6 p.m. Friday and continue until 6 p.m. Sunday.
A parade at 9:30 a.m. Saturday will be a highlight with Tammy Garrison,
the new "Miss Autumn Leaf Festival," a
participant. Also in the parade will be Shriners, the Atlanta Piper
Band, the Jefferson High School band, floats and various officials.
In addition to the events mentioned, there will be a cake walk, bingo,
horse shoe tournament, greasy pole, barbecue, ice cream, candy apples,
popcorn, antiques, rides, dancing, music, arts and crafts.
The first major event will be the cake walk at 7 p.m. Friday under the
trees in the Maysville square.
The Atlanta Piper Band will perform at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday,
bringing the unusual music of the bagpipes to Maysville.
TOM THUMB WEDDING
Two performances of the Tom Thumb wedding are scheduled. They will
be at 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, both at the Maysville Elementary
School. First, second and third graders will comprise the cast.
Dean Lewis will be "Tom Thumb" and Kelly Chitwood will be the bride,
"Jennie June." The Maysville Parent Teacher Association is the
sponsor and admission will be $1 for adults and 50 cents for children.
BILLY DILWORTH PARTY
The Billy Dilworth Country Music Party, complete
with a talent show, will be featured at 8:00 p.m. Saturday in the
Maysville gymnasium. The Dilworth Party is featured on both WLET
Radio in Toccoa and WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, S.C. Its winter series
of shows will be launched in Maysville. The box office will open at 6:30 p.m. and
tickets will be $2 for adults and $1 for children. Those under six
will be admitted without charge.
A talent show will be keyed to the main program and all types of talent
are invited to participate. Prizes will go to the five top winners.
Anyone wishing to participate should contact Elberty Mabry, festival
chairman, or William Austin. Zell Miller, Democratic candidate for lieutenant
governor, will be a special guest at the Saturday night show. He is
expected to speak briefly and assist in introducing some of the talent
groups.
The show will feature Junior Wallace and the Southern Beats of
Spartanburg, S.C.
Gospel music will highlight Sunday's program, which will open at 12:30
with the sale of barbecue. The Maysville Volunteer Fire Department also
will sell barbecue on Saturday.
The Commerce and Jackson County Jaycees are participating this year, with
the Commerce group selling popcorn, cotton candy and candy apples and the
Jackson County group handling the dunking machine, horseshoe tournament
and checkers tournament.
The Maysville Community Club is the official sponsor of the annual
festival which is being held this year for the eighth time.

parade.
First
place float winner...It was sponsored by Sears Garage. Sandra Sears,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Sears, is shown on the harvest float.
Third place float winner...Sponsored
by the Booster Club. The cheerleader float was the recipient of the
second place ribbon.
Jefferson
High School Marching Band...The majorettes lead the way. They are (L
to R) Kay Baldwin, Donna Smith, Elizabeth House, (head majorette), Jackie
Wills, Kathy Asbury and Charlotte Tucker.

Men's
Horseshoes Champs...Willie Groves (L) of Maysville and James Coker (R) of
Homer won the doubles event sponsored by the Jackson County Jaycees at the
Maysville Festival. Mr. Coker also placed first in the singles
event.
Ladies
Horseshoes Champs...(L to R) Glenda Barron of Commerce placed second,
Hazel Echols of Maysville placed first, and Jackie Skelton of Jefferson
placed third in the Jackson County Jaycees Ladies Horseshoe Tournament.
