A RESOLUTION

Commending the 2007 Maysville Autumn Leaf Festival; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on the first full weekend in October of 2007, the Maysville community will host its 40th Annual Maysville Autumn Leaf Festival; and

WHEREAS, the yearly celebration began in the fall of 1966 as the "Autumn Leaf Arts and Crafts Festival," when the president of the Community Improvement Club, Reverend Bryan Edwards, decided to create an event to capitalize on Maysville´s "ghost town" aesthetic and bring the town´s empty buildings back to life; and

WHEREAS, today, Reverend Edwards´ dream is alive and well, and the festival has been held consistently since 1966, with one exception in 1992; and

WHEREAS, in honor of the festival´s 20th anniversary in 1986, the Coca-Cola Company presented the community with a commemorative bottle with a special design featuring a caricature of Reverend Edwards image; and

WHEREAS, the event has traditionally showcased artists from throughout Georgia, including the talents of artists from the Piedmont Park Arts and Crafts Show and the Atlanta Ballet, and the festival has grown to include live music, parades, dancing, and an antique car show and has been recognized as the third largest festival in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the 40-year tradition of the Maysville Autumn Leaf Festival has brought life back to the town of Maysville and has contributed significantly to the arts and to community life in the State of Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the 2007 Maysville Autumn Leaf Festival and commend its organizers for 40 years of excellent hospitality.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the organizers of the Maysville Autumn Leaf Festival.
