Rebecca & Friends just might put Maysville back on the map.
C
HARLIE McCURDY would surely be happy to know that his old hardware store and mortuary has been renovated into one of the best kept secrets around--Rebecca & Friends.  But word is spreading like wildfire about the unique dining experience that awaits in downtown Maysville.
Located at 9169 Gillsville Hwy., in the "lower row of shops," Rebecca & Friends opened this year as "a unique dining experience where strangers become friends."
Co-owners Rebecca "Becky" Edington and Carole Pruitt worked together as nurses for 28 years for the Gwinnett Hospital System before deciding it was time to do something different.  Both have a love for history and the town, so when this opportunity presented itself, neither could pass it up.
The restaurant offers sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts and features St. Ives tea and coffees.  Guests are seated at tablecloth-covered tables furnished with unique china patterns, silverware and cloth napkins.  Tea is served in large goblets and the peach tea is highly recommended.  Plates are served garnished with leafy lettuce and fresh fruit.  Sandwiches are $6.25 and include turkey bacon club; ham, turkey & swiss; chicken salad; and roast beef & swiss served on choice of croissant wheat pita, wheat bread or tomato basil roll.  Salads are $5.95 and include chicken salad, salad sampler (choice of 3 sides) or crunchy romaine.  Side items include chips, poppy seed veggie, German potato salad, pasta salad, fruit salad, or carrot raisin salad.  Desserts are $3.95 and feature daily specials.  The children's menu is $2.95 and includes a turkey or ham sandwich or a peanut butter & jelly sandwich.
The atmosphere and decor is as much reason to patronize the establishment as the food is.  The old hardware store's original shelving is intact and refinished and stocked with delightful bric-a-brac and charming gifts, many of which are antique.  Beautifully refinished antique furniture provided by Heritage Chair Caning of Maysvillle sits about throughout the restaurant.  Most of the gifts and furniture are for sale and visitors are encouraged to look around and muse over the furnishings.
The rear of the building has an indoor balcony that overlooks a downstairs dining area.  Additional seating is also available on the rear porch outside.
Rebecca & Friends is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The staff is happy to book business meetings, clubs, luncheons, weddings, reunions, and more during other times if needed.  Edington says groups should book early since time and space is going quickly.
Edington and Pruitt rent the building from Kim & Kelly Hannon, of Maysville, who also own The Yellow Rose a few doors up.  The Hannons spent much time and money renovating the building which had recently been damaged by fire.

The view in the front sitting room shows the unique light fixtures and beautiful antiques at Rebecca & Friends.

A room with a view...This picture shows the street level dining room and the windows at the front of the store.  Track lighting illuminates the gifts on the store shelves.  The ornate tin ceiling has been refinished with a coat of bronze paint.

Members of the Jefferson Garden Club enjoy their Christmas luncheon held at Rebecca & Friends in Maysville, Georgia.

With a look that is straight out of Southern Living, guests are encouraged to sit and enjoy the view of Main Street in Maysville.  An occasional train passing by excites visitors.

Antique furniture restored by Heritage Chair Caning of Maysville adorns Rebecca & Friends giving an old Southern comfort feel to the restaurant.  Much of furniture is for sale.

A hand-painted image on the old plaster in the back of the restaurant directs patrons to the veranda for seasonal dining.

Seasonal dining on the veranda is sure to be a hit with patrons.  The comfortable wicker and wrought iron furniture make for a pleasant meal with a view of the old Maysville mop factory.

A glimpse from the balcony in the rear of the restaurant gives a view that resembles lobbies in fine resorts and hotels across the world.  The hanging chandoliers are controlled by dimmer switches.

The downstairs dining area was once used as a mortuary by Charlie McCurdy.  A recent visitor said she remembers peeking in the back door and seeing the caskets displayed for sale.  This area is used to accommodate group parties, weddings, reunions and more.
