The following ideas are offered to improve and promote Maysville:
Autumn Leaf Festival: (1) Reprint street pole banners advertising the festival. Make all banners yellow cloth with black, brown, red and orange as text colors. (2) Discontinue "arts & crafts only" booth requirement and return to allowing flea market items, kids' toys, etc., to reinvigorate the festival and attract more people. Add more "county fair" type events such as hog-calling, apple-pie baking and artisan demonstrations like blacksmithing, quilting, chair caning, etc. (3) Improve the parade. Book a marching band. Encourage clubs and businesses to enter a float and to have float work sessions to plan and design floats well in advance. Encourage use of theme and continuing emphasis on Victorian-era dress and farm life.
Christmas: (1) Be uniform in posting cloth Christmas banners. Only post one color per street, such as the blue cloth "Christmas in Maysville" banners on Homer Street. Promote "Victorian Christmas" in signage and advertising. Remove banners no later than Jan. 15 annually. (2) Hold "Christmas Tour of Homes" annually. Encourage Victorian Christmas decorating theme.
City Government : The Town of Maysville should take the initiative in promoting a Victorian theme and recognizing and celebrating its past. (1) Add "Victorian Maysville" to city stationery and city vehicles. (2) The metal "city hall" signage should be removed and replaced with a more attractive and historically-representative sign. (HOORAY! This was recently done!) The interior bank counter and windows should be immediately restored to their original state. White paint should be removed from wagon-wheel windows. A flood light should be installed at ground level to light the building's facade at night. Sod the grassy bank in front of the building. Plant flowers on the bank. (Unfortunately this grassy bank was removed in 2006 and a retaining wall and parking spaces added.)(3) Adopt official town declarations, such as naming the sugar maple (festival-related) as the official town tree and the rose (Victorian-related) as the official town flower. (4) Name more streets after Maysville's pioneer citizens (Atkins, Carr, Casey, etc.).
Overall appearance of the town: (1) Work with Georgia Power to bury all lines in the downtown area. Replace power pole lighting with streetlamps. Repair sidewalks. Establish and enforce building codes and cite owners who violate code. Condemn dilapidated structures. Encourage building of new homes and businesses to match or compliment current historic Victorian structures.
