ABOUT MAYSVILLE

Maysville, Georgia was settled prior to 1850 and incorporated in 1879.  The town is split by the Banks and Jackson County line.  It's important to note that Banks County was created from Franklin County in 1858.  If researching subject matter prior to 1858, it is important to check Franklin County records as well.  Probate court usually handles probating estates, birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates and other vital records.
MILITIA DISTRICTS
During the colonial period, Georgia counties were divided into "militia districts" for the purpose of organizing a military company to defend the area from Indian raids and other threats.  This practice continued after the Revolution, and as new counties were formed, new militia districts were created within their boundaries.

Militia districts were originally identified by the name of their Captain.  When a new Captain was elected, the name of the district would change.  In 1804, each GMD was assigned a number, and these numbers remain in use today.  Eventually, each district was also labeled with a "place name" (Newtown, Attica, Bushville), and these names have remained unchanged.  However, the practice of referring to a District by its Captain's name continued for some time on census and tax rolls, making it a challenge to determine which district is which when examining these records.

The militia system was abandoned during the Civil War period, but the district boundaries remain intact and retain their function as political subdivisions.  Militia districts were also used for census enumeration, voting and taxation and continue in use today.  (ref: Jeanne Arguelles, Oglethorpe County Georgia GenWeb)

Maysville is located in Georgia Militia District (GMD) 465.  Anderson District is the name for this district on the Banks County side of town, and Wilson District is the name for the Jackson County side of town.  Anderson District derives its name from Thomas Farmer Anderson (circa 1780-1875), General of Franklin County.  Wilson District derives its name from William Wilson, Sr. (1747-1842).
