Banks County History:

Welcome to Maysville, Georgia, a small town of just under 1500 inhabitants, located in the foothills of the Piedmont region in Northeast Georgia.  Split in half by the Jackson-Banks County line, Maysville has a past rich in history and character, and its story needs to be shared with future generations.

What began as a stop along a stagecoach route from Athens to Clarkesville would become a thriving farming community with doctors, lawyers, merchants and farmers.  In the early to mid 1800s the area remained little more than an outpost of less than a dozen farming families.  But, it was the laying of the Northeastern Railroad Company's tracks in 1876, along the former stagecoach route, that began a dramatic change in the area's commercial and residential development.  This "economic gateway" would allow Maysville an important link to the outside world.  Cotton, the staple crop, could be shipped out on train, thus allowing Maysville farmers and merchants exposure to a larger market.  The various mercantile businesses in town could also receive their goods by train to stock their shelves.  Residents were able to travel greater distances and much faster than by buggy.
