Aaron Hill Grocery

Aaron & Mozelle Hill

Home By Timeline By Alpha List

Before the arrival of "convenience" stores in Maysville, residents traded with local, family-owned grocers in downtown store buildings.

Located at 6 Homer Street, next to City Hall, Aaron Hill Grocery was the last of such grocers to cease business.  The store was operated by Aaron W. Hill (1910-1973) and his wife, Mozelle Wilson Hill (1915-2011).  After Aaron's death, Ralph Hill, his son, assisted Mrs. Hill at the store.

With the passing of Mozelle Hill this month, I realized I did not take the time of interview Mrs. Hill about the history of her store, so I now ask readers to offer assistance in documenting the history of Aaron Hill Grocery.  Below I have listed some questions which will help in writing the history.

What year did this business open?  I know the business was open in the mid 1950's since it advertised in The Maysville Herald in 1956.

What year did this business close?  I suspect the business closed after the opening of the Golden Pantry in Maysville.

What was Aaron's middle name beginning with W.?

Aaron was the son of Aaron V. "Vannie" Hill and Sarah "Bessie" Anderson..  His parents are buried at Homer Presbyterian Church.  What was his mother's full name?

Did Aaron Hill initially open his store at 6 Homer Street, or was it located in another store building?  What business was located in the store at 6 Homer Street before Aaron Hill opened his store?

The newspaper photo clipping below appears to include a history of Aaron Hill Grocery.  If you know which paper in which this article appeared or you have a copy of the article, please contact me.
