A twenty dollar bill issued in 1902 by the US
Treasury with Atkins National Bank of Maysville engraved upon it recently
sold at auction on ebay for $14,000. The ebay live auction
was held by Heritage Rare Coin Galleries out of Florida. The Blue Seal
note has the color signature of P.F.M. Furr, then-president of Atkins Bank
and has the bank's charter number of "S7986." The gallery advertised the $20 bill as one of only two known surviving national currency notes from Atkins Bank and mentions that Georgia notes are rare in general. The second surviving note, with a serial number 1 Red Seal, is "ensconced in a major Georgia long term holding," according to the gallery. This is the first time that one of the two notes has ever been offered at public sale. In 1865, after the Civil War, one-third of all circulating currency was counterfeit. The Department of the Treasury established the United States Secret Service to control counterfeits. In 1866, National Bank Notes (or national currency), backed by U.S. government securities, became predominant and 75% of bank deposits were held by nationally chartered banks. As State Bank Notes were replaced, the value of currency stabilized for a time.† Of Maysville's two banks, Atkins Bank was a national bank and Bank of Maysville was a state bank. As a national bank, Atkins was allowed to have their bank name placed on national currency notes. †History of US currency courtesy of ronscurrency.com. Page last updated 10/21/2007 |
