The cotton warehouse business is a great thing in Athens.

This city is regarded throughout Northeast Georgia as one of the best markets in the entire state, and thousands of bales of the fleecy staple are sold here every year.

After a farmer spends several restless and uneasy months in cultivating a crop of cotton he is just half way through the path towards the end.  The other half lies in the selling of his product.

There are many cotton warehouses in this section of the state and several in Athens, but not a one that is superior, in any particular, to that of Deadwyler & Co., located on Oconee Street.

The firm of Deadwyler & Co. is composed of Col. George E. Deadwyler, Jr., Mr. T. A. Smith and Mr. D. F. Miller.  This firm bought the business of J. Y. Carithers & Co.  Since purchasing this business the firm of Deadwyler & Co. has made many improvements in their place of business and added many facilities and conveniences for properly handling the cotton of their patrons.

The office, on Oconee Street, has been entirely remodeled and now presents an entirely different appearance from what it did some months ago.  Several rooms have been provided, including a separate office for each of the three members of the firm and one of the largest and most conveniently arranged sample rooms in this section of the state.  This room is large, cool and well-lighted, which is a very important item.  The entire building has been repainted, inside and outside, and it is safe to say that no firm dealing in cotton in this section of Georgia has better equipped and more conveniently arranged offices.

G.E. Deadwyler, Jr.

Col. George E. Deadwyler, Jr., the senior member of the firm, is a native of Jackson County.  He is a son of Capt. George E. Deadwyler, of Jackson County, who is well and favorably known throughout this section of the state.  Before coming here, Col. Deadwyler was engaged in the mercantile business at Maysville, as a cotton buyer and in the mercantile business under the name of Comer, Deadwyler & Co., hence, he is not a novice in the business which he has entered on such a large scale in Athens.  Col. Deadwyler…(article torn)…Deadwyler & Co., in this city, which within itself assures the success of the business.  As has been stated, Col. Deadwyler was born and reared in Jackson County.  His home during his boyhood and young manhood days was near Maysville, where he afterward went and engaged in business.  Col. Deadwyler resided in Jackson County continuously until removing to Athens, and in taking that step Jackson County lost a splendid citizen while Athens and Clarke County gained a splendid citizen.

Col. Deadwyler will be found at all times by his friends and patrons in the office of Deadwyler & Co. on Oconee Street.

T. A. Smith

Mr. T. A. Smith, another member of the firm of Deadwyler & Co., is also a Jackson County citizen.  Like Col. Deadwyler, he was born and reared near Maysville, being a son of Mr. J. N. Smith, of that section.  For a number of years Mr. Smith was engaged in business in Maysville as a cotton buyer, and there laid the foundation for the business which he has decided to follow through life.  His experience in this business thoroughly fits him for the important part he is playing in the firm of Deadwyler & Co.  Mr. Smith is the weigher for the firm.  It falls to the lot of the farmers in this section of the state who deal with Deadwyler & Co., to come in contact with Mr. Smith each time cotton is sold, and a better man could not be found for this position.

Mr. Smith will be found at the scales…(article torn)…of Deadwyler & Co., and it may be stated that he will be found by hundreds of farmers during the cotton season from year to year.

D. F. Miller

From a standpoint of service in the cotton business and service at the present place of business of Deadwyler & Co., continuously, Mr. D. F. Miller is really the senior member of the firm.  Mr. Miller came to Athens some fifteen years ago when the Central Railway was being erected from Macon to Athens.  He was engaged with some contract in this road building, but soon drifted into business in Athens, as most people do who come here and see the city.  Mr. Miller was born and reared in Pennsylvania.  He has been in the cotton business at the present location of Deadwyler & Co., for a little over fifteen years.  During that time he has been engaged with several firms, but he remains true to his first love, and through the several changes that have occurred in the business since he first become associated with it, Mr. Miller has been steadily gaining ground.  He is one of the most valuable members of the firm now in charge of the business and through the cotton season will give his personal attention to his business of buying cotton on the streets.  His headquarters will be about the store of J. S. King & Co., at the intersection of Broad, Oconee and Thomas Streets.

William C. Ash.

The sales department of Deadwyler & Co.’s business is in charge of Mr. W. C. Ash.  Mr. Ash has been engaged in the cotton business perhaps longer than any other man in Athens, and his record “at the same old stand” even surpasses that of Mr. Miller, Mr. Ash having been engaged in the cotton business at the present place of Deadwyler & Co. for more than thirty years.  Mr. Ash was born and reared in Banks County, near Homer, and has many friends throughout the several counties of this section of the state who are pleased to do business with him.  His long experience and well-known ability combine…(article torn)…treatment and the highest market price at all times.

John H. Griffeth

Mr. John H. Griffeth is the popular bookkeeper for Deadwyler & Co.  Mr. Griffeth was, for four years, with J. Y. Carithers & Co., the firm succeeded by Deadwyler & Co.  He has always given entire satisfaction to his employers, as well as to their customers.  Mr. Griffeth was born and reared in Oconee County, where Deadwyler & Co. have many good substantial customers.
