Member for 83 Years; Is Mrs. Moore Oldest
Methodist in Church? Maysville, Ga.,
January 29--In Mrs. Alsa Moore, Maysville probably has the oldest member
of the Methodist church in Georgia, figuring on the number of years she
has actually been a member of the church.
Mrs. Moore was born in 1820, and joined the Methodist church when she was
six years old, at Antioch church, Jackson county, Georgia, nine miles from
Athens, where her father, Mr. John Park, lived. She is 89 years old now,
has been a member of the Methodist church 83 years, and has been reading
the Christian Advocate since a child. She cannot read now, on account of
her eyes, but it is read to her every week.
She is a sister of Captain R. E. Park, former state treasurer who died
last year. She married Mr. Alsa Moore of Athens in 1839, lived in Clarke
county a few years, but moved back to Jackson county to the John W. Glenn
place near Jefferson, now owned by the mother of Hon. John Holder, of
Jackson county.
Six years ago Mrs. Moore fell and broke her hip and has since been
confined to her room. She stays bright and cheerful, however, and her mind
is as clear as one could expect of one of her age.--Atlanta Constitution,
reprinted in The Jackson Herald on 3 Feb 1910.
