1893 Commencement, Maysville High School

[Webmaster's note: The following article appeared in The Jackson Herald in May of 1893.]

The Spring Term of the Maysville High School, which has been in charge of Professor W. W. (sic, H. W.) Wooding, terminated on Tuesday evening, May 30th. The commencement sermon was preached by Rev. J. B. Hunnicutt of Athens Sunday morning in the Baptist Church to a very large congregation. The text was from Proverbs, “Get Wisdom,” and a more chaste and appropriate discourse is rarely ever heard. It was instructive to old and young. The exercises Monday evening were held at the academy, where a large stage had been erected on the outside and beautifully adorned with pictures and evergreens. Commodious arrangements had been made for the public’s convenience. The exercise opened with a lullaby, “Rock-a-By-Baby,” by thirty-two little girls, all dressed in white, and with their dolls they presented an attractive appearance, arranged in a semi circle on the stage. The calisthenics in the “Empire Drill” followed, exhibiting a wonderful amount of skill on the part of the young ladies and training on the part of the teachers. The oral recitations by a number of young ladies were very interesting, and the gold medal offered by Professor Wooding for best in elocution was awarded to Miss Sallie Fannie Harris, who recited without an error, closely followed by Miss Myrtis Moon. During the evening vocal and instrumental music was rendered by members of Miss Flora Meaders’ music class. The medal for best progress in music was secured by Miss Emma Miller.
