Maysville School Destroyed by Fire Tuesday Night
By F. O. Anderson
The Jackson Herald 1953

Fire of undetermined origin completely destroyed the Maysville High School building Tuesday night, July 28, causing damages estimated at $75,000.

The entire building was destroyed, and with it all the equipment in it.  The blaze was discovered about 11:15 o’clock, and the alarm was set off immediately.  The volunteer fire departments of Maysville and Commerce rushed to the scene, but it was to little avail.

The fire companies battled the blaze until 2 o’clock Wednesday morning.  They managed to save the gym and cafeteria, which are located beside the school building.

The fire was blazing fiercely when the fire truck from Commerce arrived on the scene at about 11:30.  At 11:45 the entire upper story collapsed, but the firemen battled to save the lower floors from burning; however, it was too late to save any of the main building.

There will be a special meeting of the city and county officials to discuss what will be done.  This meeting will be held on Friday night, according to Frary Elrod, county school superintendent.

Discussions will include what will be done to ease the situation.

Webmaster's note:  The cornerstone of the Maysville High School was discovered under the house of former Maysville mayor  C.L. Hanley when it was recently sold.  I do not know if the stone is still there.
