On February 11, 1796, Jackson County became the 22nd county created in the state of Georgia.  Jackson County was cut from part of Franklin County, which was created from ceded Indian territory.

It's namesake is James Jackson (1757-1806), a general of the Revolutionary War.  Gen. Jackson served Georgia twice as governor, twice as state senator, authored the state's constitution, and designed the state's seal.
