Death of Middleton Cowan Middleton Cowan. This noble old Georgian died Wednesday, May 2d, at 4 o’clock, P. M., and found rest, after suffering most intensely for more than four weeks. Never was the beauty of gentle patience and the sublimity of heroic endurance more perfectly exemplified, or human fortitude more grandly displayed, since Christ hung on the cross, than was seen in the last days of this man’s life. With perfect consciousness he met death as calmly and as cheerfully as he could possibly meet a friend. He was formed of “that sterner stuff of which heroes are made.” His father served in the Revolutionary War and in the War of 1812; and did his full duty in both. His mother, too, was one of the “women of ’76.” They were among the first settlers of Jackson county, and Middleton Cowan was the first Anglo Saxon born in the limits of the county. He belonged to that hardy, enterprising, energetic race, who changed this country from a wilderness to a garden, and made us the greatest nation on earth. They were long-lived and strong; and Middleton, himself, was eighty years and two months old, lacking one day. He was by nature a soldier, and he never knew the sentiment of fear; yet he was as kind and tender-hearted as a child. Strong as a Sampson; he was as gentle as a woman. Rugged as Mars, he was as modest as Diana. It was natural for those about him to lean on him, and as natural for him to support them; and he did it so gently! His death is not only a loss to his family; but to our county, the State and the church; for he was not simply a kind and provident husband and father; but he was a true patriot and a noble Christian. We have also lost another link that bound us back to those grand old times when men loved country more than office, and “Kirk” more than self; when patriotism was simple and noble; religion was pure and holy. We need such men now; our loss in this one is truly great. We join in the sorrows of the family, and we tender them our deepest sympathies and sincere condolence. We have lost him, but we need not lose the lesson of his life. “Lives of good men
