John Murray slain by two sons of convicted murderer

Maysville, Ga., September 3—Pink and Homer Hegwood, brothers, killed John Murray, of Commerce, on J. A. Borders’ farm, six miles east of here, Saturday afternoon.

The Hegwoods had been employing a minor son of Murray on the farm, and had refused to give up some clothing they had bought for him.  Murray came up to see about getting the clothes and found the Hegwood brothers under the influence of liquor.

Pink Hegwood and Murray got into a fight, in which Hegwood was getting the better of Murray, who was begging for help.  Homer Hegwood, who was some distance away, ran up and struck Murray a blow on the head with a bottle, and he fell over and died in a few minutes.

A coroner’s inquest was held Sunday and the Hegwoods were held for the crime.  They are in Homer jail and will be tried at the September term of Banks county superior court.

After the killing the Hegwoods secured a Winchester rifle and defied arrest for several hours, but when Sheriff Henderson reached the scene of the crime they gave up and went to jail.

They are brothers of John Hegwood, who is under sentence of death for killing a man named Whitmire in Habersham county last winter.

[Transcription note: It is unclear whether these Hegwood brothers were sons of John Hegwood or brothers of John Hegwood, since the article contradicts itself on the relationship.]
