Regions Bank to close Maysville branch

Maysville's only bank is due to close Friday, March 28, 2008.  Regions Bank notified its customers by letter dated Dec. 26, 2007 that it had decided to consolidate its Maysville branch, located at 4 North Main Street, with its Homer Branch, located at 1287 Historic Homer Highway.

Regions Financial Corporation has grown significantly since 1992, when the interstate banking bill changed to allow banks to branch outside their state of charter.  Regions, based originally in Birmingham AL, opened Georgia locations in 1992.  The Bank of Banks (County), with locations at Homer, Maysville and Banks Crossing, merged with Regions Bank soon after.  In 2004, Regions acquired Planters Union Bank, based in Memphis TN.  In 2006, Regions merged with AmSouth, another Alabama based bank, resulting in Regions Bank's rise to one of the top ten largest banks in the United States.

No other bank has operated in Maysville since the Great Depression of 1929.
