Born in Maysville, Georgia, in 1908,
Mattie Lou O’Kelley began painting at the age of 60 when she ordered her
first oils and canvas from a Sears & Roebuck catalog. She sold her first
paintings at the Maysville Autumn Leaf Festival
for under $20 each. Today,
the late Mattie Lou O’Kelley’s paintings hang in museums all over the US and
abroad and
are worth several thousands of dollars.

COLLECTOR PLATES
In 1984, Viletta China Company of Houston, Texas
produced a collectible plate series entitled Mattie Lou O’Kelley’s Down Home
Memories. Plans were for twelve different plates to be offered
through a subscription over a two-year period. Each plate was $39.95
and a plate was to be shipped every other month. Only six of the
twelve in the series were shipped: Watermelon Party, Cleaning off the
Cemetery, April Plowing, Sunning the Quilts, Summer Rain and Summer
Baptism. Each porcelain plate measured 8˝" in diameter and was
trimmed in 24-karat gold and numbered on the back. 19,500 were made of
each plate and each came with a certificate of authenticity.
Some of the other paintings which were to be plate designs were Hilly
Town and Hunting Blackberries Around the Frog Pond, but those never
saw production.
These plates are now extremely hard to find and almost always are
sold without their original box and certificate of authenticity.
I have a few below that are for sale for $50 to $75 each. The
$50 plates do not include their original box or certificate of
authenticity but are perfect for folks who just want to display the
plate on a plate stand. The $75 plates do include their original box and
certificate of authenticity and are more desirable to serious
collectors. The price includes shipping.
