Mary Arnold
Miss Mary Louise Arnold, 81, of Maysville, long-time columnist for The Jackson Herald and The Banks County News, former Maysville mayor and retired teacher, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Banks County, Miss Arnold was born December 5, 1921, a daughter of the late Noah Avery and Tressie Hill Arnold. She was a member of Maysville Baptist Church and a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association. She is remembered for devoting herself to teaching Sunday School in Maysville and Vacation Bible School throughout Georgia. Miss Arnold attended elementary school in Maysville with her two older sisters, Helen and Hilda. She graduated from Maysville High School in 1939, then attended Piedmont College and Toccoa Falls College. Like her mother before her, Miss Arnold also chose the teaching profession and spent her teaching years at Dry Pond, Gillsville and Alpharetta. She is remembered for “seeming to never forget a face, a name, or detail.” She returned to Maysville after retiring from teaching. After retirement, Miss Arnold served as the mayor of Maysville in the 1970s, and, in fact, was the first female mayor in Jackson County. Also like her mother, who wrote a news column for many years for The Jackson Herald, Miss Arnold continued that family tradition. She incorporated stories of her students, her beloved Maysville community and general local news in her columns for both the Jackson and Banks county newspapers. Miss Arnold frequently mentioned her friend and housemate, Medora Adams, her nephew Dr. John Arnold, her sister, Hilda Candler, and other family members and friends in her weekly writings, usually submitted to the newspaper as handwritten on yellow or white legal paper. In recent Maysville News “social” columns, Miss Arnold encouraged Maysville residents to join in the effort to clean up the town, wrote about the town’s centurians, passed along information about who was ill at the time of writing and whose family had suffered a loss. She provided addresses for Maysvillians now living elsewhere, told who had entertained visitors or traveled out of town, and applauded the accomplishments of local students. Miss Arnold’s final social column for The Jackson Herald and The Banks County News was published on March 26, 2003. It began: “The rain has really been making the grass grow fast. It is quite different from last year. Also it is very welcome in that we hope the summer won’t be a dry one.” After continuing with commentary on the Vidalia onion crop, a listing of visitors and an account of the previous Sunday’s sermon, Miss Arnold ended her column with a wish for the soldiers fighting overseas. She wrote: “Our prayers go out to all the boys in the war and to their families. We who have lost loved ones know the real meaning of this.” Miss Arnold, who remembered the World War II days, was featured in the Jackson and Banks county papers in 2001 commenting on the revival of a World War II cookbook that was organized during the early 1940s by the Maysville PTA and teachers, including her mother. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Maysville Baptist Church with the Revs. Brian Stowe and Robert Scruton officiating. Dr. John Hardin and Barbara Holcomb also participated. Burial was in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville.
Miss Arnold is survived by a sister, Hilda Candler, Rome. The family suggests that any contributions in Miss Arnold’s memory be made to Maysville Baptist Church. Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.
