MAYSVILLE, GA--Circa 1970--It’s possible Mr. Pat’s
“drug store” in Maysville was one of the last places anyone could purchase
a five-cent super-double-dip ice cream cone of most any flavor (strawberry
being our favorite).
As we think about it, our mind returns to those days.
For a youngster, the soda fount in itself was a sight to see: the large
mirror with the lights burning around it, the real ornate woodwork, marble
counter tops on the counters, the wire “ICE CREAM” suites with the
sweetheart-back chairs (collectors item today), the large-blade fan lazily
turning overhead. Nothing to do but be sure you would get every trickle of
ice cream as it would run down the cone.
Of course, those days are gone now, along with the two for a nickel
cigars plus the three-cent colas.
The Wilkes Bus Line bus would stop at Mr. Pat’s, folks arriving from
and departing for Commerce, Athens or Gainesville.
The bumpy road out front, so dusty in the summer and just about
impassable during the rainy winter months. Little wonder Mr. Earl Sailers,
the bus driver, could keep any schedule at all; but even with these
complaints, Mr. Pat’s smile and congenial gentlemanly ways would smooth
over anyone’s grievances and things would soon be back to normal.
In describing Mr. Pat’s “drug store” to folks of today you might call
it one of the early “supermarkets” because in a way that was what it was
(course we didn’t know it at the time). You could buy most any staple or
fancy grocery item in one section, get a regular breakfast, lunch, dinner
or short order in another section, buy most any kind of patent medicine or
remedy in another section plus the massive soda fountain where soft drinks
and ice cream delicacies were served.
Mr. Pat entered the business world back in 1912 and after 49 years of
successful operation decided it was time to retire and take it easy.
His friends and neighbors recognize Mr. Pat’s ability and honored him
with election to public office, serving as Mayor, member of the city
council and Board of Education.
Mr. Pat was active in Maysville Baptist Church over the years, too. A
long-time member, serving on the Board of Deacons and always interested in
the church, town and county.
He couldn’t begin enumerating the times he has served on the Banks
County Grand Jury and Traverse Jury over the long years.
Mr. Pat married Miss Belle Haulbrook in 1906 and of this marriage six
children were born. Later after her death, he married Miss Elizabeth Brown
in 1937, who is still living.
Mr. and Mrs. Anderson have 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Needless to say, they look forward to the children’s visits and we would
imagine the feeling is mutual, too!
You just wouldn’t believe it, but Mr. Pat will observe his 88th
birthday September 26, just a few days away, so send him a card or go by
to see them. You will find nothing but hospitality at the Anderson home in
Maysville.
(Although the source is unknown, it is likely a
local paper and probably Sept. 1970 issue since he was turning 88. Photo
of Mr. Anderson appeared at top of story.)
