Mattie Lou
O’Kelley (1908-1997) Internationally Renowned Folk Artist Born March 30, 1908, Emily Mattie Lou O’Kelley grew up in Maysville, Georgia; she left school in the ninth grade to help on her father’s farm, the subject of many of her pictures. Entirely self-taught, she began painting at the age of sixty when she ordered her first canvas and oils from a Sears & Roebuck catalogue. In 1974 she took her pictures to the High Museum in Atlanta, where the director offered to display them in the museum shop. It was there that her work first came to the attention of critics and collectors; since then, her award-winning paintings have been acclaimed throughout the world, and are included in every significant collection of American folk art.
