Diseases mentioned in local media

In early 1882, the "sore eyes" was prevalent in and around town.  By May, "flux" was raging in town.

In 1885 Maysville was "afflicted with the measles" according to The Jackson Herald.

In 1903, Mr. B. F. Carr told the Jackson Herald that Maysville has only one case of smallpox—one of the assistants in the school. He says that every precaution has been taken by the municipal authorities of Maysville to prevent the spread of the malady, and if any more cases at all develop, there will be only a few. He hopes they will have only this one case. Mr. Carr has served the people of Maysville very acceptably as mayor for two years, and he now retires from office with the goodwill of his entire town.

In 1922 Bright's Disease was the chief cause of death in Georgia causing 2,903 or 9.5% of all deaths and showing a rate of 100 deaths per 100,000 population, according to a report by the Bureau of Vital Statistics. (Source: The Jackson Herald, Aug. 9, 1923)
