ABNER GRAVES BOYD

At some point, A. G. Boyd moved from Hall County to Maysville and began operating a livery stable.  A livery stable was a place where horse owners kept their horses for a fee.  This was very convenient for visitors to town on an extended stay and for drummers, or traveling salesmen, who came in by train and needed a horse.

Reference to A. G. Boyd's Livery Stable first appears in 1893 in The Jackson Herald, when he ran an advertisement as follows:

"A. G. Boyd, Proprietor of Livery, Feed and Sale Stables at Maysville, Ga.  The traveling public is requested to put up their stock at my stables when at Maysville or vicinity.  First class accommodations given to everybody."

The A. G. Boyd family apparently changed residences in Maysville in late 1901, as mentioned in The Jackson Herald: "A. G. Boyd and family have moved to the Rylee house by the Baptist church on Homer Street."

Where did A. G. Boyd first live when he moved into Maysville?  Where is/was the Rylee house by the church?  A reference is made to the "Boyd two-story white house" in a letter on this site at http://www.victorianmaysville.com/district/lurline.htm.

In 1903, A. G. Boyd went into business with the Carrs in Maysville to form Carr, Boyd, & Co., which would become Maysville's largest mercantile operation.  Mr. Boyd was in charge of the buggy shop and the hardware department.  His son, Frank Boyd, was manager and buyer of the shoe, clothing and gentleman's furnishings department.  His other son, Guy Boyd, was the vehicle and implement salesman.  Carr, Boyd & Co went bankrupt in 1912, however.

Frequent mention is made in The Jackson Herald from 1901-1912 of the Boyds visiting Dry Pond and Jefferson.  A. G. Boyd's wife, Josephine, nee McRee, had a sister, Sarah, living in Jefferson.  Sarah May Jane McRee was married to Arthur Ezekiel Pittman.

Who were the Boyds visiting in Dry Pond?  Were there other Boyds there?

Mention is made of the A. G. Boyds visiting Mr. & Mrs. R. S. Blackwell in Maysville.  Were these Blackwells related to Abner's mother, Martha "Patsy" Blackwell Boyd?

Little mention is made of the Boyds after 1912. 

In 1933-34, A. G. Boyd was the Banks County Representative to the Georgia Legislature.
