Information is scarce on the family background of Ira A. Madden. He first appears in Maysville socials on June 25, 1880: "Mr. I. A. Madden has been spending some time at the White Sulphur Springs. His health has improved a great deal since he came here." One month later he's at the springs again, "I. A. Madden, one of our prominent merchants, is on a visit to the Springs, in Tennessee, for the benefit of his health." One year later he went again, with his friends Hugh Atkins and G. E. Deadwyler, "Messrs. Atkins, Deadwyler and Madden have just returned from a trip to Tennessee, where they have been spending some time at the Springs. One would infer, from their appearance, that the Springs has a very beneficial effect upon their health."

Around this time, Madden married Janie Boone, sister of George Perino Boone and niece of Dr. M. P. Alexander. Madden's business relationships with Boone and Alexander probably led to his introduction to Miss Boone.
By Jan. 1882, Atkins, Deadwyler and Madden had gone into business together "opposite the depot, and will supply the farmers with their necessities this season." Within a month they were building an addition to their large storeroom to help store 150 barrels of flour they had just received. "Madden, Atkins & Deadwyler have everything that the farmer needs. You can save a trip to Athens by coming and purchasing from them at bottom prices," noted The Jackson Herald on 2/24/1882.

On July 25, 1882, the Herald noted, "Mrs. I. A. Madden has a son."

A little over ten years later, in August of 1893, the Herald reported, "The storehouse of Mr. I. A. Madden of Maysville was broken into one night last week, and more than a hundred dollars in cash, several suits of clothes and other things were carried away by the burglars. The officers think they know who broke into the house."

Additional notes:
According to Ruth Boone Westbrook, a descendant of the Boone family, Ira Madden and Janie Boone Madden had five daughters. Westbrook does not know any of their names.
