U.S. Civil War  

Alexander, Manning Poole - GA 43rd Reg Co K, "Hall County, Brown's Boys", private March 10, 1862.  Appointed Assistant Surgeon. Ordered to report for duty to the Madison, Georgia hospital on March 19, 1864. He received pay Oct. 31, 1864. Paroled at Augusta, GA May, 1865. 
Arial, John Milton - GA 2nd Reg Co A. Army Northern Va. "Banks County Guards, Bennings Brigade" C.S.A.  Enlisted April 25, 1861 and served until December 31, 1864.  Served mostly in Virginia where he was wounded several times. Fought at Gettysburg.  Injured on 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg from bombshell wound on the left arm and shoulder causing partial paralysis and permanent stiffness, resulting in left arm being useless.  Listed as J. M. Aerial on muster roll.  John M. Ariail stated on his pension application that he had lived in Jackson county since Jan. 1, 1859.

Atkins, Hugh - GA 5th Reg Co E
Atkins, Jefferson - GA 24th Reg Co A  Banks County "Independent Volunteers." Noted as being on sick furlough with no other records.  Born in Jackson Co GA 18 Jan 1841. According to a CSA pension application, Jefferson says he left  Co A 24th Ga. with measles authorization given by Dr. Starr.   A. J. Sanders, pension app witness, says Jeff left the company and regiment in 1862.
Ayers, Francis Marion - GA State Troops
Bates, William Newton- GA 16th reg Co B (Jackson Co Reynolds Co), private July 17,1861. Wounded at Yorktown, Va. May 3,1862. Discharged, disability, June 23,1862. Pension records show he reenlisted July 1862, and was on light duty until war closed. Born in Georgia November 25,1840.

Carr, James Jefferson - GA State Troops
Carr, Thomas J. - GA 43rd Reg Co G "Jackson County Rebel Guards" or "Mintz Invincibles"--Jr. 2nd Lieutenant March 10, 1862. Elected 1st Lieutenant and Ensign October 27, 1862. Captured at Baker's Creek, Miss. May 16, 1863. Released at Fort Delaware, Del. June 12, 1865.  There is confusion as to the Jr. 2nd Lieutenants of this company (F). One roll shows William K. Davis as a 2nd Sergeant and Thomas J. Carr as Jr. 2nd Lieutenant, while the roll of Co. G this regiment, shows Thomas J. Carr   as Jr. 2nd Lieutenant of this company. Allen Jefferson Gunter appears as a private and 2nd Sergeant. It is supposed this confusion occurred upon the election of new officers when Captain Cicero H. Furr died on April 13, 1862.
David, Horatio J.- GA 16th Reg Co B "Jackson Co Reynolds Co" or "Center Hill Guards" private July 17,1861. Appointed 4th Corporal September 1861. Elected Jr. 2d Lieutenant March l, 1863. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Va. May 3, 1863. Wounded in eye, resulting in loss of sight, at Deep Bottom, Va. August 16,1864. Retired on account of wounds February 1865. Roll for February 1865, shows he was elected 1st Lieutenant of Co. C, March 1,1863, but name does not appear on rolls of this company. Captured and paroled, Athens, Ga. May 8,1865. (Born in Georgia December 4, 1842.)

Sheridan, Thomas David - GA 34th Reg Co H 1864 (prob 1862)-0612: Private, CSA, Co H (also known as Co B) 34th Ga Reg Banks Co; appointed corporal in 1862; 1863-0704: Captured at Vicksburg MS; 1863-0708: Paroled at Vicksburg MS; 1864-Oct: Pension record shows he left the command near Gadsden AL, being ill with chills and fever.  He enlisted with Capt. Allen's Co while at home and was discharged in 1865.

World War I
   We desire to devote a few words and lines of tribute to the boys out of the homes of Maysville who rendered valiant service to their country in the great World War, most of them spending months in active service overseas and nearly all of them were volunteers.
   Out of so long a list, numbering 48, serving in both army and navy and so many of them being in active service at the front, we feel it fitting to here mention the fact that only one of them was lost.  The noble boy and brave volunteer who gave his life for the cause of freedom and world democracy was First Lieutenant Henry T. Gillespie, who was killed in action during the Argonne Forest battle.  The following is a list of boys who served in the army and navy:

Maysville Honor Roll
A wooden board once stood in front the of the old post office (now the Mustard Seed Store on North Main Street) with the title "Maysville Honor Roll."  The names listed were probably World War II veterans.  Following is a list of those that could be deciphered from a photograph of the board: Aaron Cochran, WC Cagel (Cagle), Garnet C.
