Spring Festival Approaching
Money to furnish new gym interior
The Maysville Athletic Booster Club has
finalized plans for the May 24-26 Maysville Spring Festival, an event which is
expected to draw the largest crowd ever at any of Maysville’s festivals.
Festivities actually begin one week before with the Miss Spring
Festival Beauty Pageant. The pageant will be held Friday, May 17, and Saturday,
May 18, at 7 o’clock p.m. in the Maysville Elementary School cafeteria. Any
girl age 0-19 from anywhere may participate. The entry fee is $20.00.
Girls will be divided into eight divisions. Each contestant will
receive a participant trophy. Crowns and trophies will be awarded in each
division for first, second, third and fourth place. Forms are available at
Maysville Elementary and certain Maysville stores.
Admission will be $2.00 at the door. No advance tickets will be
sold. Charlene Roberts from Commerce is directing the pageant.
The Spring Festival starts Friday, May 24, with vendors setting up
booths. The PTA Cake Walk will begin at 7 p.m. Over 50 cakes have been donated. The Northeast Georgia Playboys, a country music band, will perform
at the Friday Street Dance from 9-11 p.m.
Booths will reopen Saturday morning, May 25, at 9 a.m. A parade
down Main Street will begin at 10 a.m. and include pageant winners, marching
units, floats, horses, unique automobiles, emergency equipment, prominent local
citizens, a gorilla, clowns and more. The Shriners will not be able to attend.
Ribbons will be awarded by judges. Music and clogging groups will perform all day Saturday. Limited
seating is available so please bring a lawn chair. The Saturday Street Dance will begin at 9 p.m. The band has not
been confirmed at this time. Festivities will end at midnight.
On Sunday morning, May 26, Maysville churches invite you to worship
with them at 10 o’clock. Booth will reopen at noon. Gospel singing will last
until the festival closes at 6 p.m. Expected entertainers include Phillip
McQueen, Kent Puckett, Walter Swain and Hubert Blalock. The MES Rainbow
Connection Chorus will perform both Saturday and Sunday.
The entire weekend will feature arts, crafts, flea market and
antique booths. The booth fee is $20. Although a full carnival could not be booked, pony rides and a
moonwalk are expected. The Maysville Historical Exhibit will be hosted by the Maysville
Fish House during the festival.
Local non-profit organizations will participate by selling candied
apples, fried pies, nachos, boiled peanuts, homemade ice cream, snow cones,
cotton candy, hamburgers, hot dogs and pastries. The Maysville Volunteer Fire
Department will sell BBQ chicken and pork plates and have announced that it will
donate all profit to the gym fund.
Planning and publicity for the event began six months ago in
November. Committees were then formed to start work on the project. Maysville
community support for the gym has been encouraging.
Festival Co-Chair Billy Dorsey said the response to the festival is
better than anticipated. “I think the festival will generate about $14,000.00
of the $20,000.00 we need,” Dorsey stated. Co-Chair Elbert Mabry agrees adding,
“This should be our biggest festival ever.”
