Local News
We notice that P. H. Davidson, G. H. Holland and W. L. Collins are on the Banks
County Democratic Executive Committee from Anderson District. John E. Jones of
Lula is the County Chairman and Ed Hill is Secretary. The County Executive
Committee sets the qualifying date of the qualified candidate for county
officers, date of the county primary, entrance fees, etc., holds the election in
each militia district. The county committee had to be appointed by the State
Democratic Executive Committee Chairman, John Sammons Bell, this time due to an
error in printing the ballots for the last election.
We hear that Henry Martin, son of Rep. Tom Martin of Banks, who recently had a serious auto accident, and who was in critical condition for a time, is making steady and definite improvement. He has been brought home from the hospital and is talking some and moving around a little.
We want to print all the news items given us each time, but sometimes we do not have room for all items, so don’t get mad with us if we leave out your item. We hope sometime to have a larger weekly paper and then be able to print all items handed us. In the meantime, we will do as best we can.
Mrs. Robert Carr is improving gradually after an eye operation at Emory University Hospital. We hope she will soon be able to be up and about her business.
Since this is the last issue of the Herald before Christmas 1955, the President, Vice President, Circulation Manager, Sec. and Treas. And Make-Up Man, etc., wishes to thank all those who have made it possible for us to attempt to publish a local paper and to extend to all the very best wishes for a merry Christmas season.
I have been asked to express the appreciation of the entire senior class of the local school for the cooperation given them by all who assisted in making their supper a success. They will use the proceeds to help pay the cost of the senior class trip to Washington, DC.
Rev. Matthew McGowan, a former pastor of the Maysville Presbyterian Church, recently resigned as pastor of the Chestnut Mountain Presbyterian Church to accept the pastorship of the Rock Mount, NC Presbyterian Church. Rev. McGowan carries with him a record of good service in our section. He has also been active in the work of the Ruritan Club while here in north Georgia. We wish him success in his new work.
Earl Sailers, Jr., has been doing a good business since opening up a radio and TV repair shop here in Maysville last summer. We are always glad to welcome new business to our town, especially new kinds. Earl, Jr., as he is known by all the hometown folks, finished high school here, and after serving time in service got his training in radio and TV at North Georgia Vocational and Trade School at Clarkesville, Ga. Upon completing his training course, he worked for a while in Atlanta, and then at Browder’s in Commerce, and then opened up his own shop here in Maysville last summer. He gives good service on all makes of radios and TV sets and guarantees his work. He handles the G.E. line of radios and TV sets and invites you to come in and inspect the variety of merchandise he is able to get for you as well as repair your disabled radio or TV set. Earl, Jr., helps me run off the Herald each time and I find him very efficient in doing this. He is married to the former Ruth Meeks and they have an apartment in Mrs. Ferd Ray's home.
We are glad to see the Southern Railway is building a small depot to replace the one which burned. This means the agency will continue to be located here in Maysville and give service to the people. I would suppose Mr. Poole, the local agent, is also happy to see them rebuilding, thus providing a place for him to permanently carry on his business. He has moved to two or three places since the old depot burned.
W. L. McGoodwin tells me that he and his partner have purchased the building which they occupy. The building was formerly owned by Mrs. Wyley. We are glad to hear that the Midway Poultry Co. has bought it for it sounds as if they are planning to make their poultry business a permanent venture here in Maysville. We wish them permanent success and may it grow continually.
A great deal of interest has developed concerning a county water works system for the people of Jackson County. Gwinnett County has already issued revenue certificates to finance a county water system which will get water from Lake Lanier and distribute it over the county. They have invited Jackson to become a part of their system by developing our own distributing system and I suppose connecting on to their system and paying them so much per gallon. I believe this would be a very worthwhile project for the citizens of the county since so many people are using more water than they used to in growing chickens, irrigation, etc., and so many people are having trouble getting their wells to supply their needs.
We understand a bad check artist came through Maysville recently and gave two bad checks in two of the stores in town. The fellow was using someone else's name on the checks he was giving. Sometimes our checks are bad when we give them for more than our bank account calls for, but I suppose we are not the only ones who have trouble with that. We hope the fellow who was forging the checks is caught and required to pay back the full amount lost by those who cashed his checks.
The annual March of Dimes Drive for Polio comes up again this January with the need about as great as ever. Part of our fight has been won against polio with the development of the polio vaccine, but there are still many thousands of patients who must be cared for. Banks and Jackson counties have been extremely lucky in the small number of cases of polio, but that does not eliminate the possibility that any of us contract the disease. Mr. Hoyt D. Jordan will direct the campaign in Banks County during January.
Our sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Leary Boone who have gone through a multitude of tragedies recently.
