The downtown park will be bright with festive Christmas lights this Saturday night when the annual Christmas in the Park celebration takes place.
Sponsored by the Maysville Community Improvement Club, the event will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the singing of Christmas carols and the lighting of the tree.
The Maysville United Methodist Church will sponsor Christmas hayrides. Of the homes on the route of the hayrides, one winner will be chosen as the most favorite decorated home. That home will win a $25 gift certificate. Riders will choose the winner. Santa Claus will also be present in his own booth ready and waiting for your wish list and a picture to be made with him. The commemorative ornaments for 1999 will again be available and also hot and cold refreshments.
A live nativity with small animals such as llamas and pigs will be on display and drawings for prizes will be held throughout the evening. The event is scheduled to close at 9 p.m. For more information you may call Cyndi at 706-652-2334.
The tickets for the Tour of Homes were scheduled to go on sale on Nov. 26 but will now be sold beginning Dec. 2. The first year ticket price was lowered to $3 each to allow more people to take advantage of the opportunity.
Tickets are available at Golden Pantry and Short Stop and from any community club member. For more information call Catherine at 652-3013.
The Maysville Post will not be printed on the scheduled date of Dec. 29, as we will be closed for the holidays.
In the last issue of The Post a figure was given of $400.00 as a donation from the City to the Jackson County Literacy Program; however, we had an extra zero past the decimal point. We regret the typo.
Also in the last issue we printed that the work done on the Police Department was completely paid for by the county, however, the City supplied materials.

If you haven’t seen it, you should. The new Denny’s restaurant located in front of the Tanger Mall is the first of its kind in Georgia. Its exterior is reminiscent of the 1950s era and the stainless steel exterior is only surpassed by the red, white and stainless steel combination of the interior. Decorated in the 50s style, it seats just under 100 people.
The atmosphere is a treat in itself but the big fun comes when every half hour the employees gather in the middle of the place and begin to dance. General Manager Remonica McNichols said this new diner concept involves having servers perform dances such as the hand jive, YMCA or even a buck dance.
The store plans to employ about 30 individuals but currently is “borrowing” employees from other locations.
The current hours are 6 a.m. until midnight but will change to 24 hours a day as of Dec. 15, according to Ms. McNichols.
The Maysville Post receives many suggestions for stories. We also receive tips and requests for investigations. We do all we can to include stories you would like to read and try to follow up on tips that may seem to be of general interest to the majority of the community. We do not, however, wish to involve the paper in personal issues between two quarreling individuals. Thankfully, we don’t get many requests for that.
We do appreciate the thoughtfulness of those who call or write with genuine stories of interest, so please do not stop.
Some newspapers, even small ones like ours, sometimes have to make decisions on what stories we print, occasionally based on the amount of good it might do in the long run. We have to weigh one side against the other. Should we research and write a story that will cause major upheaval, anger and hurt and knowing in advance that nothing will be done to better the situation? Sometimes bringing the news to the forefront makes just the awareness of a situation cause an action to correct it. Sometimes is causes tongues to wag but the hands and feet won’t follow.
